Great Success in the Science Olympiads

Top Honors in State Go to Coral Academy of Science

Coral Academy of Science earned top honors in this year's Science Olympiads held in Las Vegas , Saturday, March 3, 2007 . Science Olympiad's mission is to promote and improve student interest in science and to improve the quality of K-12 science education throughout the nation.  More than 400,000 students compete in state tournaments in Science Olympiads. Coral Academy of Science high school students will represent the state of Nevada on May 18th and 19th, 2007 at Wichita State University in Kansas .


After having competed in the Science Olympiads during the past 5 years, CAS finally earned first place with their high school team.


The high school team is composed of 13 scholars: Ana Manzano, Mary Jane Peterson, Ben Gaetke, Tim McCrea, Jarred Schindler, Pooja Singh, Lex White, Ryne Hager, Devyani Tanna, Jeremy Stevens, Tim Chancy, Niko Anderson, and Tarek Barghouti.


In addition to placing first with the high school team, the middle school team also performed well, earning second place overall in the state.


The middle school team is composed of 10 scholars: Victoria McCrea, Lauren Cromer, Chris Capen, Alex Renfro, Ryan Magera, Brandon Stackhouse, Jesse Howell, Mark Peterson, Brin Smith and William Janosik. Another student, Philip Donaldson, was unable to compete due to illness.


Coaches Renee Aldrich (Biology), Martin Braik (Biology/Dept. Chair), Ben Cabuk (Physics), Tekin Tuncer (Chemistry) and others helped to prepare students for the competition.


“This is very exciting but not a surprise result for us. This success came after five years of dedication, persistence and hard work. We are very proud of our dedicated teachers, hardworking students and supportive parents. This year's team made a landmark success in our school's history. I am very proud of being part of a community that raises state champions” says Mr. Acar, Vice Principal of Curriculum.
